On Friday, September 16, 2022, Representative Wendell Gilliard and a delegation of local Charleston Community Leaders met with the Commander of Joint Base Charleston to explore opportunities for the base to support the education of area youth through internships, scholarships, summer jobs, and other programs to promote all levels of aviation careers. The discussion, which was introductory in nature, was described as proactive and collaborative and set the state for a more comprehensive exploration of specific programs, projects, and initiatives at a second meeting to be scheduled in coming weeks.
Representative Gilliard was joined by Reverend Kevin Brown, Pastor of Kingdom Vision Christian Center and Ms. Brenda Grant, James Island Public Service Commission Member, at the meeting with Col. Mike Freeman, Commander of the 628th Air Base Wing and Joint Base Charleston and Col. Bobby Lankford, 437th Airlift Wing Commander.
Much of the discussion focued on the challenges faced by young people in the neighborhoods that are adjacent to the base and the positive impact the base could have in mastering those challenges.
